Anda pasti tahu apa itu popcorn. Itu lho, cemilan yang biasanya menemani anda menonton film di bioskop. Kalo yang pernah di XXI, pasti merasakan kalo cemilan ini harganya jadi mahal sekali, meskipun saya akui rasanya memang enak.

Pasti banyak diantara kita yang bertanya-tanya, terbuat dari apa sih popcorn itu? Jawabannya: JAGUNG. Lho, kalo jagung kok bisa jadi begitu besar dan renyah? Padahal kita tahu kalau jagung itu kan kecil dan keras. Eh, tetapi memang seperti itu lho faktanya. 🙂
Bagaimana proses terbentuknya popcorn?
Popcorn dibuat dengan memanaskan jagung. Memang semudah itu membuat popcorn. Jagung dipanaskan pada suhu 250°ree; celsius di suatu wadah tertutup. Dalam satu menit, maka biji-biji jagung itu akan mulai meletup satu persatu atau bersamaan. Secara ajaib, bentuknya berubah menjadi lebih besar beberapa kali lipat dan lebih empuk.
Apa yang menjadi penyebabnya? Jawabannya: AIR.
Setiap biji jagung memiliki cangkang yang keras di bagian luarnya. Sedangkan di dalamnya mengandung semacam tepung yang diselimuti air. Saat dipanaskan, air akan berubah menjadi uap dan terus mendesak cangkangnya. Seperti meniup balon, ada tekanan maksimum yang bisa ditahan oleh cangkang.
Saat uap air terus menekan cangkang, maka tidak ada jalan lain bagi cangkang kecuali pecah dan memberi jalan pada uap. Itulah asal letupan popcorn. Bagian tepung yang bercampur air akhirnya keluar, terpapar udara dan berubah menjadi spons putih lunak favorit anda.
