Meneliti Komodo Ternyata bisa Dengan Camera Traps
Anda tahu bagaimana cara menghitung jumlah Komodo? Selama ini para ahli menggunakan sistem tangkap dengan jebakan, meneliti mereka dan dilepaskan lagi. Sistem ini membutuhkan usaha dan biaya yang besar. Maka dari itu, para ilmuwan mencoba cara yang lain, yakni camera traps atau jebakan kamera.
Seperti kita ketahui bahwa camera traps sering digunakan untuk memonitor mamalia besar seperti harimau dan badak, namun hingga saat ini belum pernah digunakan untuk Komodo, kadal terbesar di muka bumi. Akan tetapi penelitian terbaru menunjukkan bahwa camera traps dapat digunakan untuk merekam aktifitas Komodo dan menghitung populasinya.
Seperti dikutip dari Live Science, camera traps bekerja dengan mengambil gambar saat ada pergerakan di depannya yang terdeteksi menggunakan sensor gerak atau infrared untuk mendeteksi panas tubuh. Namun panas tubuh adalah masalah potensial yang terjadi pada reptil dan amfibi, mereka berdarah dingin yang terkadang memiliki temperatur sama dengan lingkungan sekitar.

Namun hasil penelitian yang dipublikasikan di jurnal PLOS ONE menemukan bahwa camera traps dapat digunakan untuk Komodo, bahkan di beberapa tempat bekerja dengan sempurna. Kelebihan dari camera traps ini adalah menggunakan lebih sedikit tenaga manusia, lebih sedikit biaya dan juga waktu.
Seperti kita ketahui bersama, Komodo adalah kadal paling besar di muka bumi. Komodo jantan dapat tumbuh hingga 3,3 meter panjangnya dan memiliki berat 87 kilogram. Menurut penelitian, binatang kebanggan Indonesia ini memakan apa saja, termasuk rusa, kamping, babi hutan, anjing dan terkadang manusia.
Sayang sekali kepedulian masyarakat Indonesia terhadap Komodo masih kurang. Hewan ini berada di ujung kepunahan menurut International Union for Conservation of Nature. Bahkan pemberitaan tentang Komodo pun terhenti bersamaan dengan selesainya kontes New 7 Wonder yang kontroversial itu.
