Menonton Film Kartun Battle of Surabaya
Dunia film Indonesia memang tidak sedang berada di masa-masa keemasan. Tidak seperti di tahun 1970 hingga awal 1990-an yang “booming” film Indonesia. Sejak awal milenia baru, film Indonesia memang merosot, baik segi kuantitas dan kualitasnya.

Selama satu dekade, tidak banyak film Indonesia yang bisa dikatakan berkualitas. Mayoritas hanya berkutat dengan dada dan paha, sudah seperti jualan ayam goreng krispi saja. Kalaupun tidak ada dada dan paha, ceritanya hanya seputar cinta-cintaan, apapun tema yang dibawa.
Apa itu Battle of Surabaya?
Battle of Surabaya adalah film kartun 2D buatan Indonesia pertama yang rilis dalam 15 tahun ini. Saya tidak menggunakan frasa “pertama di Indonesia” karena saya tidak tahu sejarah film kartun Indonesia sebelumnya dan bagaimana mengelompokkannya. Film ini dibuat oleh MSV Pictures, studio film yang merupakan badan usaha dari STMIK AMIKOM Yogyakarta.
Film ini berkisah tentang seorang anak kecil bernama Musa yang “terjebak” dalam kondisi Indonesia pasca kemerdekaan. Ia menjadi tukang semir sepatu merangkap kurir untuk bertahan hidup di tengah kondisi ekonomi yang saat itu semakin menghimpit. Segera saja ia terlibat dengan petualangan saat ia diminta mengantar surat-surat rahasia komunikasi militer dan petinggi Surabaya.
Tentang visual Battle of Surabaya
Dari awal saya tidak memiliki ekspektasi yang tinggi terhadap visual dari Battle of Surabaya. Dengan budget yang “ramping” untuk ukuran film kartun, anda tidak akan bisa berharap grafis kualitas tinggi. Jika harapan anda adalah grafis tingkat tinggi, berarti film ini bukan untuk anda. Secara umum, kualitas visualnya cukup bisa dipandang mata. Paling tidak kualitasnya setara anime, ehm, memang berasa nonton anime sih. 🙂
Paling tidak pergerakan detail kecil seperti gerakan mulut dan ekspresi wajah tidak ada yang “miss”. Gerakan mulut juga mendekati dialognya. Mimik dan ekspresi wajah juga sudah tepat. Sinkronisasi suara dan gambarnya cukup bagus. Sejauh yang saya ingat, tidak ada yang melenceng meskipun hanya sekian detik. Bisa jadi saya salah, memang karena saya tidak terlalu memperhatikan detail visual.
Ada yang perlu menjadi catatan untuk masalah visual. Ada banyak adegan yang membuat pandangan saya kurang nyaman. Entah karena saya yang berkacamata atau memang seperti itu adanya. Gangguan ini terjadi ketika layar menampakkan background diam dengan karakter yang bergerak disertai pergerakan “kamera”. Sepertinya saat adegan konvoi pasukan di jalanan atau saat Musa berlari dengan camera angle dari depan.
Efek dari “bug” ini adalah saya merasa seperti bergoyang-goyang, terasa seperti melihat air yang banyak, pandangan yang membuat mual. Saya belum konfirmasi dengan yang lainnya, namun itu yang saya rasakan pada saat adegan bertipe diatas. Hal ini belum pernah saya temui di film kartun 2D lainnya. Baru kali ini saya merasakan hal semacam itu. Mungkin hal ini bisa diabaikan jika ternyata hanya saya yang mengalaminya. 🙂
Tentang cerita & tokoh Battle of Surabaya
Saya mengakui bahwa ide cerita Battle of Surabaya cukup bagus. Mengambil “titik kosong sejarah” memang membuat kita bisa berkreasi sesuka kita, asalkan awal dan akhirnya tidak merubah sejarah. Saya paling suka dengan film bertema demikian. Itulah sebabnya saya mau menonton Battle of Surabaya. Tema cerita yang seperti ini pasti menarik saya seperti lebah madu yang tertarik dengan bunga.
Background para tokohnya dibahas dengan cukup jelas dengan mode flashback dalam beberapa adegan. Paling tidak kita bisa tahu, siapa mereka dan kenapa mereka berada di situasi sekarang. Tokoh sentral seperti Musa, Danu dan Yumna memiliki latar belakang pembentuk karakter yang bisa dikatakan masuk akal. Tokoh tentara Cak Sholeh juga lumayan “nendang” meskipun hanya cameo. Saya pun menobatkan Cak Sholeh sebagai karakter terbaik dalam film Battle of Surabaya ini. Hehehe.
Ide cerita dan gambaran besar dari ceritanya memang bagus, tetapi menurut saya eksekusinya kurang bagus. Jalan ceritanya tidak berpihak kepada tokoh utama ataupun misinya. Ada beberapa adegan penyita waktu yang seharusnya tak ada pun tidak masalah. Seperti misalnya dibakarnya desa dan rumah Musa yang menyebabkan ibunya meninggal, tidak memiliki keterkaitan apapun terhadap misi Musa. Apalagi adegan “wejangan” di tengah api yang berkobar hampir selama satu menit itu benar-benar “nggak banget”.
Adegan-adegan yang saya anggap tidak penting itu hampir semuanya “FTV banget”. Sayangnya tidak semua adegan itu saya inget detailnya. Intinya adalah jika adegan itu diganti dengan adegan Cak Sholeh, pasti film ini bakalan meningkat derajatnya. 🙂 Hal lainnya adalah, cara Maudy Ayunda membawakan karakter Yumna sedikit mengganggu di telinga saya. Entah karena arahan sutradara atau memang Maudy Ayunda yang karakter suaranya tidak cocok, cara bicara Yumna terkesan mesra dan manja jika bicara ke Danu dan Musa, justru melemahkan karakternya.
Silahkan sebut saya bodoh, namun saya tidak paham bagaimana cerita Battle of Surabaya ini berujung. Awalnya dikatakan pada Musa bahwa ada kode-kode yang perlu disampaikan kepada para komandan pasukan tentang bagaimana mereka membaca perintah dari musik keroncong yang ada di radio. Harapan saya adalah Musa berhasil mengantarkan kode itu (lalu kita diberitahu bagaimana kode itu bekerja) dan Musa berperan penting dalam pertempuran 10 November 1945.
Saya pun kaget ketika di ujung cerita yang dibawa Musa hanya surat-surat dari para tentara untuk keluarga mereka. Ini menjadikan Musa tidak punya peran apapun dalam pertempuran itu. Jika begitu kondisi endingnya, maka Musa hanya alat kontra intelejen dimana ia dijadikan umpan padahal kode sebenarnya dikirim oleh “agen” lainnya. Bagi saya, itu jahat sekali, memperalat anak usia 13 tahun dengan resiko kematian. Meskipun dalam perang, itu jahat sekali. 🙂
Kesimpulan film Battle of Surabaya
Sebenarnya ada beberapa titik lagi dalam film ini yang ingin sekali saya bahas, misalnya tata bahasa, tetapi artikel ini sudah terlalu panjang. Setidaknya hal-hal diatas sudah mewakili semangat saya untuk “berkata yang sebenarnya”. Harapan saya, apa yang saya bahas diatas bisa menjadi perbaikan bagi karya MSV Pictures selanjutnya. Bisa dibilang “proyek mercusuar” STMIK AMIKOM Yogyakarta kali ini cukup berhasil.
Kalau saya ditanya apakah film ini saya sarankan untuk ditonton? Saya bisa jawab bahwa saya netral. Saya tidak menyarankan ataupun melarang orang menonton Battle of Surabaya. Saya hanya akan bilang bahwa salah satu kontribusi kita dalam menghargai karya anak bangsa adalah menonton film ini di bioskop. Kembali kepada anda, apakah ingin menghargai karya bangsa sendiri atau tidak.
Secara umum, film ini lumayan. Meskipun ada kekurangan disana-sini, itu wajar sekali, mengingat ini adalah sebuah “karya pertama”. Tetapi untuk film yang saya tunggu hampir 3 tahun (pertama kali tahu film ini sekitar 2013 awal), saya mengaku kecewa, terutama dengan jalan ceritanya. Mungkin ekspektasi saya yang terlalu tinggi, bisa jadi ada yang tidak sependapat tentang hal ini, ya itu wajar sih.
