“Mad Mike” Hughes Dan Kaum Bumi Datar
Mike Hughes atau yang biasa disebut sebagai Mad Mikes memicu kontroversi beberapa tahun di belakang. Ia berusaha untuk meluncur dengan roket yang ditenagai uap bertekanan tinggi. Percobaan sebelumnya pada 28 April 2018 dapat mencapai tinggi 1.870 feet atau 570 meter.

Pada percobaan 2 tahun lalu itu, Mad Mike mengalami cedera pada tulang punggung yang menyebabkan dia harus dilarikan ke rumah sakit. Tak ada kapoknya, sabtu kemarin (22/02/2020), Mad Mike mencoba lagi untuk memecahkan “rekor” sebelumnya, namun ternyata hal ini terbukti menjadi akhir dari petualangannya. Roket yang ia buat sendiri bersama dengan rekan-rekannya mengalami crash landing di Highway 247, Barstow, San Bernadino. Polisi menyatakan bahwa Mad Mike tewas di lokasi jatuhnya roket, kemungkinan karena parasut yang tidak berfungsi dengan baik meredam benturan. Berita ini menjadi topik hangat di Amerika Serikat.
Siapakah “Mad Mike” Hughes?
Mad Mike adalah julukan yang diberikan media kepadanya atas aksinya menantang maut, bahkan ada yang memecahkan rekor dunia. Nama aslinya Mike Hughes, lahir di California, sekitar tahun 1955. Dia terkenal sebagai flat-earther atau penganut paham bumi datar. Aksinya selama 3 tahun terakhir adalah berusaha untuk mencapai ruang angkasa dengan roket yang dibuatnya sendiri. Roket tersebut menggunakan sistem kompresi uap air. Kurang lebih seperti roket yang dibuat oleh anak-anak SMP/SMA sebagai eksperimen di sekolah. Bedanya adalah roket kali ini besar dan si Mike sendiri yang menaikinya.
Benarkah Mike Hughes seorang flat-earther?
Benar atau tidaknya, kita tidak tahu. Tetapi dari sejarah, kita bisa belajar. Pada tahun 2016, Mike mengadakan penggalangan dana untuk mendanai pembuatan roket dan peluncurannya. Dipublikasikan sebagai aksi menantang maut, ternyata tidak mendapatkan sambutan yang positif. Mike dan tim hanya dapat mengumpulkan donasi sebesar 300 dolar AS. Terlalu sedikit, bukan? Tiba-tiba saja Mike mengubah narasi bahwa aksinya membuat dan meluncurkan roket adalah untuk mendapatkan bukti bahwa bumi itu datar. Spontan, narasi ini mendapat dukungan dari kaum bumi datar dan Mike mendapat sumbangan sebesar 7.875 dolar AS.
Dari sini kita bisa melihat, apa yang dilakukan oleh Mike adalah hal yang biasa dilakukan oleh politisi, yakni menjadi penumpang gelap untuk mencapai tujuan tertentu. Politisi di manapun, seringkali mendukung atau menolak sesuatu hal dikarenakan keuntungan (baik materi maupun elektabilitas), meskipun dirinya sebenarnya tidak percaya akan hal tersebut. Memang tidak ada bukti bahwa Mike adalah bukan penganut paham bumi datar, tapi dari kronologi, pengakuannya tampak politis dan kaum bumi datar termakan dengan ini lalu membiayainya.
Bagaimana seharusnya membuktikan bumi datar?
Untuk membuktikan bahwa bumi datar, tidak harus membangun roket sendiri, butuh waktu lama dan beresiko. Kabar baiknya, ada beberapa perusahaan yang sudah melakukan riset untuk membuat Space Tourism. Sebut saja Virgin Galactic (milik Richard Branson), Blue Origin (milik Jeff Bezos, Founder Amazon) dan SpaceX (milik Elon Musk, sang real life Iron Man). Saat ini semua memang sedang dikembangkan, belum ada yang benar-benar menerima turis dan menerbangkannya ke luar angkasa, tapi ada harapan untuk itu. Yang terdekat adalah SpaceX, jika penerbangan kapsul Crew Dragon sebagai misi NASA mengangkut astronot ke ISS berhasil tahun ini, SpaceX akan mulai menerbangkan turis angkasa sekitar akhir 2021 atau awal 2022.
Meskipun masih lama, bisa kan urunan dulu buat ditabung. Sebagai gambaran, saat ini harga peluncuran roket Falcon 9 milik SpaceX adalah 5,7 juta dolar AS per peluncuran. Anggap saja Crew Dragon memiliki harga yang sama. Kapasitas totalnya adalah 7 orang, sehingga kurang lebih biayanya per orang adalah sekitar 800 ribu dolar AS. Biaya sebesar ini sebenarnya sudah cukup murah, lho.
Komunitas bumi datar kan anggotanya banyak di seluruh dunia. Pastinya dalam 2 tahun bisa mengumpulkan uang untuk mengirim satu atau dua orang wakilnya menaiki Crew Dragon untuk membuktikan sendiri apakah bumi datar atau bulat. Jika takut jendelanya adalah “monitor”, bisa tuh minta kamera yang disediakan sendiri untuk ditaruh diluar. Tentu saja harus dimodifikasi dan diberikan pelindung. Berhubung SpaceX adalah perusahaan privat bukan badan pemerintah, pasti mereka mau mengakomodasi, asalkan bayarannya sesuai kan ya.
