Wewe Gombel adalah sebuah makhluk mitologi yang berasal dari Jawa. Ada banyak versi kisah Wewe Gombel di masyarakat Jawa, tergantung daerah masing-masing.

Wewe Gombel memiliki wujud seorang wanita, tetapi Wewe Gombel bukanlah kuntilanak. Sering terjadi kesalahan dalam hal ini. Wewe Gombel tidaklah mengenakan kostum gaun putih dengan bagian punggung berlubang. Visualisasi Wewe Gombel yang sebenarnya justru sangat berbau pornografi. Bahkan konon katanya anak-anak yang diculik itu akan dikembalikan ke orangtuanya jika mereka telah sadar dengan perbuatannya, menginginkan anak mereka kembali dan berjanji untuk merawat anaknya dengan cara yang lebih baik.
Moral dari Wewe Gombel
Bisa kita katakan bahwa Wewe Gombel lebih mirip seperti Komisi Perlindungan Anak di masa modern ini. Mereka melindungi anak-anak, bahkan dari orangtuanya sendiri. Seperti yang sudah pernah saya bahas, cerita mitos merupakan cara untuk membentuk masyarakat. Dari situ kita bisa melihat tujuan dan moral dari cerita Wewe Gombel.
- Menakuti orangtua dengan tujuan supaya merawat anak-anaknya dengan baik dan tidak memperlakukan mereka dengan kasar.
- Menakuti anak-anak supaya tidak keluar malam hari karena di jaman dulu banyak hewan buas berkeliaran di malam hari.
- Menjaga ketertiban dan keamanan desa dengan tidak membiarkan orang berkeliaran di malam hari.
Di jaman yang masyarakat masih sangat mempercayai hal-hal mistis, mitos memang cara yang paling efektif untuk mengatur tatanan dalam bermasyarakat. Dulu manusia mempercayai kebenaran yang sederhana, yakni kita akan mendapatkan balasan dari apa yang kita perbuat. Sedangkan manusia sekarang yang materialistis tentu mempercayai hal yang lebih rumit sehingga membutuhkan hukum yang lebih rumit.
Hanya saja dewasa ini Wewe Gombel tidak lagi diceritakan dengan tujuan yang sama dengan di jaman dulu. Beberapa cerita yang beredar saat ini justru mengaburkan inti atau moral cerita diatas sehingga orang hanya takut pada Wewe Gombel-nya, bukan perbuatannya sendiri. Kasihan Wewe Gombel, saat ini semua ceritanya hanya untuk tujuan komersial belaka.
