Fakta Konyol tentang Tenggelamnya Titanic

Sejarah adalah kumpulan cerita masa lalu. Meskipun Begitu, sejarahlah yang membentuk wajah dunia saat ini, bahkan kehidupan kita.

Sebagai contoh, kita tahu bahwa Indonesia merdeka pada 17 Agustus 1945. Bagaimana kalau dulu Ir. Soekarno memutuskan untuk segera mendeklarasikan kemerdekaan pada, katakanlah, 10 Agustus 1945? Pasti H. Mutahar akan kebingungan bagaimana menciptakan chord yang pas untuk lagu Hari Merdeka ciptaannya. Hehehe.

Kita bisa bilang bahwa takdir mempengaruhi dan membentuk sejarah. Allah memang punya cara yang unik untuk menentukan sebuah peristiwa terjadi. Terkadang peristiwa besar diawali dari kesalahan yang kecil, bahkan untuk peristiwa yang mengguncang dunia. Mulai saat ini, ada baiknya jika kita waspada pada hal-hal yang remeh, siapa tahu hal itu bisa berakibat pada bencana yang besar.

Tenggelamnya Titanic karena hal kecil

Semua orang tahu bahwa kapal RMS Titanic tenggelam karena menabrak bongkahan es di suatu tempat di Atlantik utara. Semua orang tahu bagaimana Titanic tenggelam, tentang kesombongan kapten kapalnya yang mengatakan kapal ini “unshinkable”, dsb. Siapa sih yang tidak tahu Titanic? Minimal pernah nonton film-nya di TV sambil berharap segera ke adegan sketsa Rose, lalu kecewa karena payudara Kate Winslet disensor. Hahaha.

Oke, skip adegan tersebut. Kita ke adegan yang terlihat tidak penting, tapi sebenarnya penting. Pernahkah kamu menyadari, kenapa para penjaga di menara pengawas (di film Titanic ada dua orang) tidak menggunakan binokular atau teropong untuk melihat apakah di kejauhan ada bongkahan es atau tidak. Tampak aneh karena di tahun tersebut, binokular sudah ditemukan lebih dari 200 tahun lamanya. Apakah para penjaga itu lupa membawa binokular dan malas turun untuk mengambilnya? Tentu saja tidak.

Yang benar adalah penjaga itu tidak membawa binokular karena peralatan tersebut terkunci di loker perlengkapan. Dan coba tebak dimana kuncinya? Masih tertinggal di Inggris, ada pada David Blair, -yang mungkin saja kakeknya mantan PM Inggris, Tony Blair- yang seharusnya menjadi Second Officer. Di saat terakhir, perusahaan White Star Line mengganti David Blair dengan Charles Lightoller. Tak ada satupun kru, termasuk Blair sendiri yang menyadari bahwa kunci loker perlengkapan masih ada padanya.

Salah satu penjaga itu bernama Fred Fleet, dalam kesaksiannya menyatakan bahwa jika dia menggunakan binokular saat bertugas, sangat mungkin ia dapat melihat bongkahan es itu lebih awal dan kapal Titanic mungkin bisa menghindarinya. David Blair mungkin tertawa sambil menepuk jidat saat ia pulang saat itu, tidak menduga bahwa hal sekecil itu adalah awal sesuatu yang buruk.

Kita memang tidak tahu apakah jika binokular tersebut dipakai kapal akan tenggelam atau tidak, tapi yang pasti adalah suatu bencana besar tidak disebabkan faktor tunggal yang berdiri sendiri. Bagaimana menurut pendapat anda?
