Koneksi internet sudah bisa dikatakan kebutuhan sekunder oleh banyak orang saat ini. Cara orang terkoneksi ke internet itu macam-macam, mayoritas di Indonesia menggunakan koneksi 3G, baik GSM maupun CDMA. Dulu, satu koneksi 3G hanya untuk satu orang. Tidak demikian dengan sekarang ini.

Seiring kemajuan teknologi, alat pembagi koneksi internet (router) pun ikut berkembang. Jika dulu router hanya bisa digunakan untuk koneksi kabel, saat ini router juga bisa digunakan untuk koneksi 3G yang notabene adalah nirkabel. Berikut adalah keuntungan menggunakan 3G wireless router.
Bebas bergerak, sinyal tetap stabi
Sering sinyal 3G di satu titik berbeda dengan titik lainnya. Saat kita menempatkan laptop di lantai dan diatas meja, sinyal 3G nya bisa berbeda. Wireless 3G router mengendalikan modem dan membagi koneksi melalui WiFi. Jadi, secara teknis bukan PC/laptop kita yang terkoneksi dengan operator, tapi router yang melakukannya.
PC/Laptop kita terkoneksi dengan 3G router via WiFi. Oleh karena itu kita dapat meletakkan 3G router kita di posisi yang sinyalnya paling baik. Selain itu untuk pengguna laptop juga bisa lebih bebas kesana kemari tanpa khawatir sinyal 3G yang diterimanya kurang baik. Jika disetel dengan benar, jangkauan sinyal WiFi bisa dinikmati di seluruh bagian rumah.
Satu koneksi bisa untuk banyak perangkat
Kepemilikan terhadap lebih dari satu perangkat sudah merupakan pemandangan umum di masyarakat kita dewasa ini. Satu rumah bisa memiliki banyak perangkat. Baik itu laptop, tablet atau ponsel pintar. Ponsel pintar saat ini juga semua sudah dilengkapi WiFi. Dengan router 3G, semua bisa disatukan.
Penggunaan wireless 3G router dapat menghemat biaya koneksi. Tidak perlu lagi membeli paket data terpisah-pisah untuk masing-masing perangkat. Setiap perangkat yang memiliki koneksi WiFi bisa terkoneksi ke 3G router dan menikmati koneksi internet bersama-sama. Bisa difungsikan untuk hal yang lain
Ada proyek open source yang diberi nama OpenWRT. Pada dasarnya proyek ini bertujuan untuk menjalankan linux diatas router yang memiliki kapasitas kecil. Sudah banyak 3G router yang didukung oleh proyek ini, contohnya adalah keluarga Huawei. Mulai dari MR3020, MR3220 dan MR3420, didalamnya bisa ditanam OpenWRT.
Untuk anda yang ngerti teknologi dan suka “ngoprek”, pasti akan senang mendengarnya. OpenWRT bisa digunakan untuk banyak hal. Sebagai contoh, dengan tambahan webcam saja, bisa digunakan sebagai CCTV sederhana. Jika anda mengerti tentang pemrograman, OpenWRT bisa digunakan untuk melakukan otomatisasi, apalagi jika ditambah dengan arduiono.
