Linux adalah sistem operasi yang dikembangkan oleh Linus Torvalds pada tahun 1991, tepat 24 tahun yang lalu. Linux meniru basis sistem Unix yang kala itu sangat mahal lisensinya.

Pada saat melepas Linux sebagai sebuah proyek Open Source, Linus Torvalds tidak pernah bermimpi bahwa karyanya akan menjadi sebesar sekarang. Saya kenal dengan Linux pada tahun 2002, pada saat kelas 1 SMA. Saya juga tidak menyangka bahwa Linux akan sebesar ini. Dulu orang bahkan tidak pernah dengar apa itu Linux, sekalipun ia pemakai komputer. Sekarang banyak orang mendengar Linux, meskipun mereka tidak pernah menyentuhnya sama sekali.
Harus kita akui bahwa salah satu pembentuk internet saat ini adalah Linux. Sistem operasi yang terkenal akan keamanannya ini ikut berkontribusi mempercepat pertumbuhan server website. Sebanyak 35,9% server website menggunakan Linux, menurut W3Techs. Meskipun masih di urutan kedua setelah Unix, Linux sudah di depan Windows sangat jauh. Tentu ini akibat dari keunggulan Linux yang paling besar, yakni GRATIS. Biaya pembuatan server dapat ditekan karena tidak perlu membayar lisensi penggunaan.
Linux sendiri sering disalahartikan sebagai Distro. Yang dimaksud Linux adalah KERNEL atau CORE atau inti dari sistem operasi. Kernel ini tugasnya berkomunikasi dengan hardware atau mengendalikan input output. Kernel inilah yang bekerja di tingkat CPU/Processor. Itulah Linux. Saat ini rilis Linux terbaru versi stabil adalah 4.1.6, belum banyak digunakan di distro yang beredar secara luas. Kebanyakan distro Linux menggunakan kernel Linux versi 3.4.x atau 3.6.x dengan X sebagai angka versi minor.
Linux sendiri memang tidak terlalu familiar digunakan sebagai desktop. Saat ini Linux sebenarnya sangat mudah diinstall dan digunakan oleh orang awam. Masalahnya hanyalah kebiasaan saja. Menurut saya sih begitu. Mayoritas orang memang lebih memilih berada di zona nyaman dengan Windows, ketimbang belajar untuk menggunakan Linux. Apalagi bagi mereka yang menggunakan komputer untuk bekerja, tidak ada waktu lagi untuk belajar. Mereka lebih memilih untuk menggunakan Windows, meskipun harus membayar lisensi atau membajak daripada harus belajar Linux.
Saya akui bahwa saya familiar dengan Linux Desktop. Sebenarnya distro apapun itu ya interface-nya tidak terlalu berbeda. Hanya ada beberapa saja seperti GNOME, KDE atau XFCE. Yang lain seperti Cinnamon, MATE atau Unity hanya turunan dari ketiga sistem tersebut. Bahkan saat ini sudah semakin mirip dengan Windows. Namun entah kenapa saya lebih nyaman berada di Windows daripada Linux. Tetapi untuk urusan server, saya tetap mempercayakan kepada Linux. Termasuk server Hanya Lewat ini menggunakan distro Debian versi 7.8 sebagai sistem operasinya. 🙂
