Mempertebal “Rasa” dalam Menjalani Kehidupan
Saya bukanlah penganut kejawen dalam arti spiritual, namun sebagai orang Jawa, sudah sepantasnya saya melestarikan ajaran nenek moyang yang saya rasa baik. Salah satunya adalah ajaran mengenai samudra rasa atau berkaitan dengan perasaan.
Merasakan apa yang orang lain rasakan
Salah satu cara untuk menghargai orang lain adalah dengan merasakan apa yang orang lain rasakan. Kakek saya dulu mengajarkan saya untuk menebalkan perasaan dengan cara menempatkan diri dalam posisi orang lain. Cara yang paling mudah melakukannya adalah dengan mengajukan pertanyaan kepada diri sendiri. Sebagai contoh kasus ada orang yang tidak bisa pulang karena kehabisan uang, lalu meminta pertolongan kepada kita. Apa yang kita lakukan? Mulailah dengan pertanyaan seperti ini:
- Mungkinkah itu terjadi pada diri kita suatu saat nanti? Tentu mungkin jika Tuhan menghendaki.
- Berada di tengah tempat yang asing, tidak ada satupun yang menolong, bagaimana perasaan kita?
- Bagaimana jika itu terjadi pada saudara, kekasih atau sahabat kita?
Masih banyak pertanyaan-pertanyaan serupa untuk membangkitkan rasa kemanusiaan kita. Dengan begitu kita bisa merasakan apa yang orang lain rasakan saat sesuatu yang buruk atau kurang menyenangkan terjadi. Dengan begitu kita lebih mudah merasakan empati, meskipun mungkin saja tidak bisa menolong dengan sebuah tindakan nyata.
Semua orang adalah sama di mata Tuhan
Ada sebuah hikmah yang saya petik setelah bertahun-tahun hidup di dunia. Bahwa semua manusia itu adalah sama, maka kita dapat mengalami apa saja yang dialami orang lain saat ini. Seorang kaya bisa saja mengalami miskin atau sebaliknya. Orang yang pandai pun bisa saja tertipu atau sebaliknya. Di muka bumi ini tidak ada yang tidak mungkin terjadi. Bahkan apa yang datang seringkali tidak bisa kita prediksi sama sekali.
Oleh karena itu sebagai manusia, ada baiknya kita bersiap menghadapi apapun. Menolong orang yang membutuhkan juga salah satu cara untuk mempersiapkan “alam semesta” untuk mendukung kita, jika suatu saat kita membutuhkan pertolongan. Apakah ada yang bisa menjamin kita tidak membutuhkan pertolongan di suatu hari nanti? Saya jamin tidak ada. Maka dari itu persiapan yang paling baik bagi diri kita adalah dengan menolong orang lain. Sebagai orang Jawa, saya percaya bahwa semua perbuatan pasti akan dibalas. Entah itu seketika, besok atau esoknya lagi. 🙂
Menebalkan rasa bukan berarti tidak bertindak logis
Meskipun kita menggunakan hati sebagai tolak ukur setiap perbuatan kita, bukan berarti kita tidak menggunakan akal sehat. Justru komponen dari “rasa” adalah hati dan akal sehat. Jika kita hanya menggunakan hati saja, maka mudah bagi kita untuk dimanipulasi menggunakan hal-hal yang menyentuh hati. Hal-hal yang bersifat materil, sulit dilihat kebenarannya dengan hati, maka kita harus menggunakan akal sehat.
Contoh yang paling sederhana pernah saya temui sendiri, yakni peminta sumbangan yang mengatasnamakan panti asuhan. Seorang bapak mengaku berasal dari daerah antah berantah di Madura sana. Dengan mengutarakan monolog yang atraktif dan menyentuh hati, bapak ini ujung-ujungnya minta sumbangan. Awalnya hati saya tersentuh. Siapa yang tidak tersentuh jika memikirkan nasib anak-anak yatim piatu?
Namun kemudian hati saya menyulut otak untuk berpikir. Hei! Itu Madura! Apakah disana tidak ada orang yang mau menyumbang? Kenapa harus datang ke Jogja? Jauh lho Madura ke Jogja. Ongkos transportasi? Makan? Tidur? Masuk akalkah meminta sumbangan sejauh itu? Mengingat Surabaya kota besar yang tidak jauh dari sana, bahkan bisa dicapai lebih dekat dan realistis. Berhubung banyak pertanyaan yang tidak bisa saya jawab, saya minta bapak itu untuk melapor ke RT terlebih dahulu. Coba tebak, apakah bapak itu kembali atau melapor ke RT? Keduanya tidak.
