Tuhan tidak menciptakan segala sesuatunya tanpa guna. Penelitian terbaru menunjukkan bahwa pasir pantai dapat digunakan untuk membuat baterai.

Bukan sekedar baterai biasa, namun baterai lithium-ion yang biasanya dipakai di ponsel kita. Bahkan menurut jurnal yang dipublikasikan pada Scientific Reports, penggunaan pasir pantai dapat membuat daya tahan baterai tiga kali lebih lama daripada biasanya.
Penemuan tersebut dipelopori oleh Zachary Favors, seorang lulusan dari University California at Riverside. Ide ini didapatnya ketika sedang duduk di pantai. Ia menyadari bahwa ternyata pasir pantai mayoritas terdiri dari kuarsa atau silikon dioksida.
Pasir pantai sebagai sumber silikon
Saat ini, kutub negatif pada baterai lithium-ion menggunakan grafit. Silikon dibidik sebagai pengganti grafit karena dapat menyimpan energi lebih banyak 10 kali lipat. Tetapi silikon sulit diproduksi dalam jumlah besar dan mudah rusak.
Nah, mungkin saja silikon dioksida dapat menjadi solusi sebagai sumber silikon yang murah dan melimpah. Prosesnya dijelaskan oleh Favors, seperti yang dilakukannya dalam laboratorium.
Garam murni dan magnesium dicampurkan dengan kuarsa lalu dipanaskan dan menghasilkan bubuk. Ini adalah proses yang sangat sederhana, garam bertindak sebagai penyerap panas, sementara magnesium mengambil oksigen dari kuarsa sehingga membentuk silikon murni. Lebih dari sekedar murni, struktur nano-silikon terbentuk sangat berpori dengan konsistensi seperti spons. Porositas adalah salah satu kunci meningkatkan kinerja anoda baterai karena menyediakan area permukaan yang lebih besar dan memungkinkan ion dari lithium untuk melalukan perjalanan dengan lebih cepat.

Favors telah mematenkan teknologi ini dan digunakan untuk membuat baterai lithium-ion sebesar koin. Jika digunakan untuk baterai ponsel, maka hanya perlu satu kali charge untuk tiga hari. Berbeda dengan baterai biasanya yang harus dicharge setiap hari.
