Budaya pagan itu masih belum bisa diguncang, maka Paus Gregorius III mengeluarkan taklimat bahwa All saint’s Day yang juga dikenal dengan All Hallows’ Day (1 November) dijadikan satu dengan Samhain. Dalam perayaan ini penduduk desa diminta untuk berpakaian seperti orang-orang kudus dan para pemuda disuruh untuk berjalan dari pintu ke pintu mengemis makanan untuk orang miskin. Sekarang terdengar seperti Halloween yang kita tahu, kan?

Maju cepat beberapa ratus tahun, malam sebelum All Hallows’ Day disebut dengan All Hallows’ Evening atau disingkat Hallowe’en. Kristen Protestan berusaha untuk menyingkirkan praktek pagan ini namun bangsa Celtic masih merayakan ini dengan api unggun dan membolehkan anak-anak mengemis uang. Di Amerika, kaum Puritan melarang Halloween, Natal dan Paskah karena mereka menganggap hal itu lebih Katolik. Hanya Katolik dan Episkopal yang merayakan Halloween.

Jutaan imigran asal Irlandia membawa tradisi Halloween ke Amerika. Mereka memakai kostum dan mengunjungi rumah-rumah di lingkungannya untuk meminta makanan atau uang. Lebih mirip dengan Trick or Treat sekarang kan?

Anoka, Minnesota adalah kota pertama yang secara resmi merayakan Halloween. Menyusul New York pada tahun 1923 dan Los Angeles pada tahun 1925. Pada tahun 1966, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charles Brown” membuat debut penampilan di televisi. Itulah asal labu kuning yang diukir mirip monster sebagai dekorasi Halloween.
